Men’s Cargo Shorts – Beware of the Bad

To my guys out there, before you go shopping for shorts this summer, it may help to be aware of what style of cargo short to buy and what style not to buy.

There are good cargo shorts and there are bad cargo shorts. There are also lots of really bad cargo shorts. This post will help guide you to what style to look for the upcoming summer season. And perhaps inspire you to replace shorts in your wardrobe with better options.

Every summer, I see cargo shorts that look very utilitarian and disheveled. I am referring to the cargo shorts with massive outside pockets on the legs (why?) huge back pockets, doodads hanging everywhere, baggy and super wrinkly fabric. This style is honestly kind of awful and does not flatter anybody, or any body.

Now, I know it is not easy to find shorts that look good and fulfill what you need them for in warmer weather. So, here are some tips below of what styles to avoid and what style to look for. The first thing is to be on the lookout for cargo shorts that are nice-casual.

Cargo shorts to avoid:

1. large outside pockets – this style is really not flattering or fashionable. If you want to wear this style hiking ok, however, not to be worn elsewhere

2. hanging strings or hanging tabs or anything hanging – looks like you are wearing a backpack on your legs – too much excess stuff happening

3. baggy or loose fitting – this portrays an unkempt look

4. wrinkly fabric – looks like you just slept in a tent and woke up and went out – not a good look

5. shorts that come with that weird fabric belt – you don’t need to wear a belt with casual shorts

6. too long below the knee – this length will make you look shorter and isn’t flattering. If you want a longer length, a better look would be to move to a capri length pant which is a little longer and more flattering

7. Very wide legs with oversized back pockets – you will look lost in these

This is the style to avoid – refer to #1-#4 above (on fc-moto.de)
This is not a flattering length refer to #6 plus the rest of of this style falls into what to avoid in #1-#4 above (on amazon.ca)
Refer to #7 – Is the man wearing the shorts or are the shorts are wearing the man? (on beautifulhalo.com)

Instead look for:

1. pockets that are neat and have clean lines

2. straight leg or slightly tapered leg

3. more fitted to your body, like a nice pant (but shorter)

3. no cuffs preferable or cuffs are fine if they are neatly pressed

4. fabric that does not wrinkle easy or is not wrinkled on purpose

If you want a cargo short vibe, look for cleaner lines and side pockets that lay flat. This is actually the best example I could find, however, you get the idea (it was actually really hard to find pics of nice cargo shorts! on columbiasportswear.ca)

Final Thoughts

Shorts for men can be fashionable, look nice, flattering and still be comfortable given the right style and fabric (see pics below). I hope to motivate and inspire you to elevate your look this summer and kick it up a notch with nicer, more fashionable options. And as I usually say, what is the downside? You will look great and feel great!

All the best and until next time…

I am not a fan of cargo shorts, just a personal preference, so this clean casual style is a great option to a cargo (nordstrom.com)
I like this. This is a notch above a cotton short because the fabric is not as casual as cotton and could be dressed up or down (nordstrom.com)
